Vigilante movements consist of groups of individuals who come together to unofficially prevent crimes or apprehend and punish those who have committed them. They operate independently from the state because they believe that official institutions, such as the police or the government, are not effectively controlling crime or unable to do so. These groups often resort to violent methods to achieve their objectives.
