The war began with Iraq’s president (Saddam Hussein) formally declaring war on Iran, and it lasted for 8 years until Iran decided to cease fire. The war is infamous for the indiscriminate use of ballistic missiles and chemical weapons in cities, mostly by Iraq. Approximately 1 million of soldiers died and half more became permanently invalid.
