The Hirak Movement

The Hirak Movement was a popular protest movement that began in February 2019, after Algerian former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced his candidacy for a fifth presidential term. The peaceful protest movement opposed the President’s clientelist system and prompted the military to demand the resignation of Bouteflika. The movement went on to see the arrest of several power brokers close to the deposed administration and played a prominent role in the election of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in the same year.
