The Great Depression began in 1929 after the US stock market crashed and did not end until after World War II in 1946. The depression led to a depreciation of nominal wealth for individuals as well as companies. This is also when Keynesian economics became popular as governments realised that they could also play their part in stimulating the economy and should not solely rely on the free market system.
