Kemalism is a modernization philosophy which guided the transition between the multi-religious Ottoman Empire to the secular, unitary Republic of Turkey. The Turkish army has long seen itself as the protector of Turkish secularism, which has come under attack by Erdogan’s AKP party in the 21st century.
