United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) was adopted in 1982. It lays down the rules governing the use of the world’s oceans and seas and of their resources. China, Russia and the European Union have all ratified UNCLOS, while the United States has not. One of the dispute settlement mechanisms available to state parties to the Convention is the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.
