Why is she in the news? After concluding her 7-day visit to China last week, Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has announced an increased national focus on strengthening strategic partnerships and industrial cooperation, as well as expanding trade, with China. As part of her first visit to China since taking office in March 2025, Nandi-Ndaitwah is looking to boost Namibia’s social and economic development as part of her Vision 2030.
Why do we care? As part of Nandi-Ndaitwah’s expanding partnership, agreements on strengthening mining cooperation were signed during the visit, covering the development of key minerals. Namibia holds significant deposits of uranium, lithium, and rare earths, which are increasingly critical to tech supply chains and clean-energy production. China’s resulting investments will shape who controls access to these resources on the international stage, fitting into a broader strategy of President Xi Jinping’s expansion of influence across the continent.
Why should you care? Namibia has traditionally relied on its partnership with the United States of America. As Nandi-Ndaitwah begins her second year in office, the shift toward China signals a broader realignment in Southern African foreign policy, especially after the dissolution of USAID, four months after her inauguration, on the 1st of July, 2025. USAID provided Namibia with 90.4 million USD in 2024, of which 99.8% was allocated to economic purposes. With its loss, Nandi-Ndaitwah’s pivot will aim to fill the economic gap left, addressing Namibia’s persistent socioeconomic constraints.
Who else cares? President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, together with the President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa, are two other regional leaders who are also courting Chinese mining investments. The terms set by the China-Namibia partnership will help reinforce regional expectations, providing a competitive benchmark to other Southern African countries.
