Why is he in the news? OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has dismissed concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) data centers’ impact on water scarcity and electricity consumption amid their growing unpopularity. Despite acknowledging that data centers have fueled resentment across the political spectrum, Altman announced on September 12 that OpenAI would not go public this year citing renewed AI risks following the OpenAI-Hugging Face incident.
Why do we care? With 2.5 billion prompts processed a day, AI energy consumption is expected to reach 950 terawatt-hours by 2030, outpacing the electricity infrastructure required. The same prompt uses up to 20 times more energy to process than it did in 2023 and contemporary midsize data centers use over 300,000 gallons of water per day. Bipartisan concern in the U.S. has moved the vote for the Ratepayer Protection Act forward to September 15. Ahead of the U.S. midterm elections in November, data centers are a critical flash point.
Why should you care? Altman’s recent statements do signal a willingness to open OpenAI to external evaluators. Nevertheless, AI’s environmental concerns are competing with AI’s recursive self-improvement and escalating cybersecurity risks. With over 900 million users weekly, ChatGPT’s adoption has been faster than that of the internet, phone or computer. The sudden shift to accepting regulation will affect AI supply chains and lead to fewer data centers, slower releases and restriction on high performance features.
Who else cares? Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, the AI company behind Claude, released an essay urging frontier AI companies like OpenAI to slow the pace of AI development. Despite being competitors, Altman has acknowledged the need to pace growth.
Any further comments? U.S. President Donald Trump opposes the regulation of frontier AI development to maintain a competitive edge over China. Altman reacted by urging industry leaders to self-regulate regardless.
