Name? Giorgia Meloni
Westphalian identity? Italian
Age? 49
Why is she in the news? Following last week’s G7 summit in France, U.S. President Trump revealed that Italy’s Prime Minister Meloni begged him for a photograph, and claimed he agreed because he felt sorry for her. In response, Meloni countered that Trump was lying, stating, “Neither I nor Italy ever beg”.
Why do we care? Trump and Meloni have been cast as ideological allies. As the only European leader to attend Trump’s inauguration in 2025, Meloni was regarded as a close European partner, and as a bridge between the U.S. and the EU. However, things began shifting in April 2026, when Meloni defended the Pope’s condemnation of the conflict in Iran and later refused to back the U.S. military position on Iran. Trump has since accused her of falling short on NATO commitments, testing Meloni’s ability to maintain her image as a reliable international actor while delivering on her promise of austerity domestically.
Why should you care? The widening rift between Meloni and Trump emphasises how personal disagreements can escalate into diplomatic tension. As a prominent European conservative leader, Meloni’s foreign policy choices reflect Italy’s role within the EU and the future of transatlantic relations. Meloni’s government backed her stance by denying Trump the use of Italian resources during the war in Iran, despite Washington’s status as one of NATO’s top defence spenders. In a further show of solidarity, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani cancelled his visit to the U.S. over Trump’s statement, suggesting Rome may no longer be willing to let its strategic autonomy be defined by its relations with the U.S.
Who else cares? French President Macron has expressed interest in maintaining unity between Europe and the U.S. while pursuing European strategic autonomy.
Any further comments? Could this be Meloni’s sign to turn a new leaf and focus on strengthening ties with Europeans instead of right-wing allies elsewhere?
